Our Client, a state government department responsible for a wide range of services primarily focused on land, transport and infrastructure, asked us to develop an Enterprise Application Development Framework for the development and management of GIS applications built within Microsoft's .NET framework.
Our objectives were to document the application development components, define the application development platforms and to define the set of contractor deliverables. Our research revealed a number of options for components of the framework - each was rigorously evaluated based on Client needs, industry standards, best practices and essential characteristics. Throughout we documented guidelines to deliver justification for decisions and documented all stages to provide an information source for future framework development. The final recommendation was based on latest industry standards and was broadly and easily accepted due to its Service Oriented Architecture, flexibility and reusability. The VB .NET development package was easily integrated into the Department's application development efforts, with the first GIS application seamlessly implemented within the framework, replacing a legacy system. The framework supports wider deployment of GIS across the Department as well as integration with Whole-of-Government internet based initiatives. As part of our comprehensive solution service we transferred our .NET experience to Department personnel to assist with their self-sufficiency and knowledge development. The Framework has also been deployed within other government departments. |
